anywhere else in the world. Spaniards are unfailingly courteous to
strangers, and while they may not always understand you, they will at
least make the effort. It's a wonderful spot to rest. They won't let you

Madrid has a 2,000-foot elevation and it is fairly cold in the winter
and hot in the summer, but due to its dry climate, it isn't bad. It
receives the fresh breeze from the nearby Sierra de Guadarrama which, it
is said, makes it the most healthful capital of Europe. Best months are
May, June, September and October.
Barcelona, situated on the Mediterranean coast, offers an ideal holiday
climate. It is hot in the summer, mild in winter. Best seasons are
spring, which starts as early as March, and autumn; winter does not
start until November. Barcelona's hottest months are July and August,
but the beautiful nearby mountains and coast are an excellent and
comforting refuge. Many exclusive, smart clubs in both cities. In
Madrid, Real Club Puenta de Hierro and Club de Campo. In Barcelona
there's the Polo Club, Real Club de Golf el Prat, Real Club Nautico.
Spaniards are not too punctual, sometimes a little late for
appointments. Luncheon is late, aperitivo (cocktail hour) may run as
late as 9:00 or 9:30; with dinner served from ]0:00 P.M. on to midnight,
when the town really becomes alive.
After having made friends with a Spaniard and when separating after the
first conversation with him, tell him your name and address, thus
offering your house. This is a common Spanish courtesy.
